Frequently Asked Questions About Beginner BJJ Classes
Absolutely! Most people start BJJ to GET in shape, not because they already are. Our beginner classes are designed to accommodate all fitness levels. You'll work at your own pace and improve gradually. Within weeks, you'll notice significant improvements in your cardio and strength.
Not at all. Flexibility is not required to start - it's a benefit you'll gain from training. BJJ actually helps improve flexibility naturally through the movements and stretching incorporated in class. Many of our students started with limited flexibility.
Just wear comfortable athletic clothing - a t-shirt and athletic shorts or sweatpants. Don't worry about buying a gi (uniform) until after your first class. We want you to try it out first and see if it's the right fit for you.
No. You won't do any live training (sparring) until you're ready and comfortable. The first several weeks focus entirely on learning fundamental positions and movements through guided drilling. Sparring is introduced gradually and is always optional.
You're never too old to start! We have students in their 40s, 50s, and even 60s who train regularly. BJJ is often called "the gentle art" because it relies on technique and leverage rather than strength. Many people discover BJJ later in life and wish they'd started sooner.
